Ghana is competing at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with teams representing the country in both the Open and Women’s sections of the global chess tournament, which runs from September 14 to 28, 2026.
The Ghanaian delegation departed Accra on September 14, 2026, ahead of the prestigious competition, which is being held from September 16 to 27, 2026, at the Silk Road EXPO in Samarkand.
The 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad features a record 208 teams in the Open section and 191 teams in the Women’s section, with players competing across 11 rounds for collective and individual honours.

Ghana is participating in both the Open and Women’s sections, giving the country’s representatives the opportunity to test their skills against some of the finest chess players from around the world.
Ghana’s Open Team
Ghana’s Open team comprises:
– CM Bernard Anhwere
– CM Cephas Clinton Fomevor
– FM John Kojo Hasford
– Prince Akpa
– Daniel Loglo
The team is captained by Philip Elikem Ameku.
Ghana’s Women’s Team
The Women’s team features:
– WCM Maud Benson
– WCM Gertrude Banini
– Ridham
– Sumya Ibrahim Dotse
– Esi Dzidzor Dotse
The team is captained by Maxwell Kwasi Kporxah.
The Ghanaian delegation is led by Air Cmdr. George Arko-Dadzie, while Christiana Ashley, President of the Ghana Chess Association, is also playing an important role in the country’s participation.

Ashley, an International Arbiter, has been selected among the officials appointed to officiate at the Olympiad. Her appointment further highlights Ghana’s contribution to the prestigious event both on and off the chessboard.
The Ghanaian contingent is supported by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, National Sports Authority, Ghana Olympic Committee and Ghana Chess Association, whose backing has helped facilitate Ghana’s participation in the global competition.
Ahead of the tournament, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Mr. Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, extended his best wishes to the players, officials and the entire delegation, urging them to carry the national colours with pride.
“I wish the entire Ghanaian chess team the very best of luck at the Olympiad. Represent Ghana with pride and determination, give your very best and make the nation proud.”
The message reflects the hopes of a nation as Ghana’s chess representatives take on the challenge of competing on one of the biggest stages in international chess.

With determination, discipline and sportsmanship, the Ghanaian players will look to make their presence felt in Samarkand while gaining valuable experience against strong international opposition.
As the 11 rounds unfold in Uzbekistan, Ghana’s national colours will be proudly displayed on the global chess stage.
