Algeria kicked off their TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024 campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Botswana in a tightly contested Group B opener.
According to Accra Sports News, the decisive moment came early in the first half at the Père Jégo Stadium, where Inter Milan midfielder Ghoutia Karchouni calmly finished off a well-timed assist from Inès Boutaleb in the 10th minute. The early goal set the tone for Algeria, who maintained control for most of the encounter.
Despite trailing, Botswana demonstrated great resilience and posed threats of their own, registering 10 shots — three of which were on target — but were repeatedly denied by Algeria’s alert goalkeeper, Chaima Bouheni.

Algeria, on the other hand, ended the match with 14 attempts on goal and seven on target but failed to extend their lead. Their organised defence, however, held strong against Botswana’s late surge in search of an equaliser.
The result puts Algeria in a favourable position as they look to build momentum in Group B. Botswana, although defeated, showed promising signs and will aim to bounce back when they face Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Thursday.
Algeria’s next test comes against Tunisia, as they seek to secure early qualification to the knockout rounds.
