The Ghana Football Association has announced that Chris Hughton has been dismissed from his position as head coach of the senior national team, effective immediately.
Ghana has parted ways with head coach Chris Hughton following their early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations. The team couldn’t manage a win in any of their three group-stage matches, picking up just two points and ending up third in Group B.
The Black Stars wrapped up Group B with two points, drawing 2-2 against both Egypt and Mozambique after starting with a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde.

Ghana had distant hopes of progressing as one of four best-ranked third placed sides, but were eliminated on Tuesday when results went against them.
Hughton had been appointed as Ghana head coach in February last year.
“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement said., external
The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.
“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”
Former Newcastle United and Brighton boss Hughton began working as a technical adviser for the four-time continental champions in February 2022.
He took over from Otto Addo after Addo resigned following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana ended up at the bottom of Group H with just one win from three games. Ghana had also crashed out of the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon at the group stage, and faced the same disappointment in Ivory Coast.
The GFA said it was “100%” behind Hughton after a fan had a “verbal altercation” with the coach following their shock defeat by Cape Verde.
It had looked like the 65-year-old would guide the Black Stars to the last 16, with Ghana sitting second in Group B while holding a 2-0 lead over Mozambique in their final group game.
The Mambas pulled off a stunning comeback, scoring twice in second-half stoppage time to secure an unexpected draw that knocked the Ghanaians out. It capped off a rocky start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for the West Africans under Hughton, who had earlier edged past Madagascar with a late goal before falling 1-0 to Comoros.
The Executive Council has decided to disband the Black Stars’ technical team.
The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.
