With Finland poised to advance, Xhemaili latched onto a low cross from Geraldine Reuteler in the second minute of added time, steering home the equalizer that sent the home crowd in Geneva into raptures.

“Scoring that goal was a real relief,” said Swiss player Leila Wandeler. “We all played together, we knew we had to fight together,” she told RS1.

The result sees Switzerland finish second in Group A, level on four points with Finland but ahead on goal difference. They now prepare to face the winner of Group B — expected to be world champions Spain — in the quarter-finals on July 18.

Finland, who saw their hopes dashed in the final moments, were left stunned. “Switzerland were much better than us,” admitted Kuikka. “They came to the game like they wanted to win. We lost a lot of individual battles.”

Elsewhere in Group A, Norway continued their perfect run with a 4-3 win over already-eliminated Iceland. Signe Gaupset and Frida Maanum each struck twice, while Iceland’s goals from Sveindis Jonsdottir, Hlin Eiriksdottir and Glodis Perla Viggosdottir weren’t enough to prevent a third straight defeat.

Norway topped the group with nine points and will meet the runners-up from Group B in the next round.
