Mexico capped off a flawless group stage campaign with a 3-0 victory over Czechia at the Estadio Azteca on Tuesday, sweeping Group A with a perfect nine points and zero goals conceded.
Having already clinched top spot, Mexico manager Javier Aguirre made six changes to his starting eleven, handing a first World Cup start to 17-year-old sensation Gilberto Mora. After a cagey, scoreless first half, Mexico erupted after the break.

World Cup debutant Mateo Chávez broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, finishing a left-footed strike assisted by Luis Romo. Julián Quiñones doubled the advantage six minutes later, striking home a loose rebound. Substitute Álvaro Fidalgo added the definitive exclamation point four minutes into injury time, rifling a low shot home to seal Mexico’s biggest victory of the group stage.
Legendary 40-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was subbed on in the 77th minute to a raucous ovation from the home crowd. The appearance cemented his status alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by playing in his sixth distinct World Cup tournament, making him the first goalkeeper to achieve the feat.
Mexico finished with 11 shots, five on target, while Czechia managed 12 shots, one on target. Mexican passing accuracy stood at 88 percent compared to Czechia’s 84 percent.
